Papua Indonesia Mission Effort

MISSION STATEMENT: To establish strong, mature churches in Papua, Indonesia, both in the cities, villages and remote tribal groups.

It is the prayer and desire of the Shepherds of Meadow View that we reach out to the souls in Papua Indonesia. We would also like to make you aware of the brothers and sisters that are in Papua Indonesia.

Martin, Julie, and Sarah Johnson: Will be going to Papua, Indonesia for a minimum of five years beginning in February 2005. They will initially go to Serui, Papua for about six months to learn the language.

Martin, and Julie both graduated from the Sunset International Bible Institute in May of 2003. Martin has been serving the church in Durango, Colorado since his graduation, as an Intern. In August 2004 they completed a four weeks survey trip to Papua Indonesia. There they visited with David Buskirk who has been in Papua for twelve years. They also visited several of the remote congregations where they saw the need for additional assistance to teach, evangelize, and mature the remote congregations.

We need your prayers and financial support. A one-time contribution for relocation expenses and monthly support for living expenses.

David Buskirk: David is a Missionary living in Urei Faisei, Papua, Indonesia.

A brief overview of what has been accomplished since the beginning of the work in 1986. A Bible School was established in order to train evangelists and leaders in the local congregations. The idea was that the missionaries would only teach for a couple of months and then have the rest of the year to focus on church planting and church growth. The Bible school students would return to their local congregations and would help to strengthen and mature the congregation. The Bible School was established in 1988 in Serui and moved into the permanent facilities in the village of Urei Faisei in 1992 where it is at present. Currently we have a six-month basic Bible training program. Many of the graduates are now leaders in their local congregations.

David Buskirk arrived in Indonesia in 1992. In 1993 he became director of the Bible school. At this date 2004 fourteen congregations have been established.

David would love to get some encouraging words from you. He is fluent in English, Spanish, and Indonesian.

The map to the right shows the province of Papua, Indonesia.

Papua is a province of Indonesia, covering most of the western half of the island of New Guinea and nearby smaller islands. Papua, Indonesia shares its eastern border with Papua New Guinea. The province was renamed from Irian Barat to Irian Jaya (1973) and then to Papua (2002).

Papuans are Melanesian, a Pacific ethnic people including those of the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia. Like the mountains of Greece, Papua has developed a diversity of separate cultures and languages; there are 253 known languages and over two hundred additional dialects.

There are fourteen Chruches of Christ in Papua with about 260 faithful memebers. This mission effort was started in 1986. The cities with the red crosses show the locations of the churches.
